The Netflix Spear Phishing Attack

Brand new spear phishing attack sent out to Neflix subrscribers

One of the most common styles of security attacks are phishing scams. Phishing is the way to steal sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by pretending to be a trustworthy entity (a well-known brand) through any electronic formats.

The most recent spam attack internet users faced in Ireland was the Netflix attack. The usual scam message seems genuine and normally requires users to enter their credit card or bank account details details by following a link. The success of these phishing scams lies on the fact that hackers use a brand’s name and logo to try and generate trust from the users and then collect enough information used for credit card fraud or identity theft.

It is very important that users that face spear phishing attacks do not click on such messages and especially that they never submit their sensitive information (credit card details, bank account details, passwords etc.) no matter how genuine they look. Internet users should also change their password regularly and install a computer protection program or get specialised support if they feel they have been recently attacked.
